All the lonely people

My wife was shopping recently and noticed a car license plate, it read "lonely". That really took my wife's breath away. We have all seen the multitude of ridiculous license plates that are out there.  Some are bragging, others have cryptic statements on them. This is the first time we have ever seen anything like this. Was this person really so alone that they had to make such a visible statement?

Every Christmas we hear of an increase in suicide. The lonely, during the holidays are really alone.   I do find it strange that the church which prides itself on reaching out, doesn't seem to reach these people.  Somehow the lonely get missed.  It is easy to invite our friends to dinner, but not those we don't know. It is easy to be around people that are like us. Just look at church on a Sunday morning, our congregations are often a reflection of the people we like to be with. In America, Sunday morning is the most segregated day of the week.  During the work week we are with people from all races and backgrounds, but Sunday is different. That is a time for people like me.

I think this is where hospitality comes in. Not the hospitality we are familiar with, an act that invites only friends or family.  I'm talking about biblical hospitality, a kingdom act.  This is where we care for others, not because they are like us but because they are loved by GOD.  We invite such people into our lives, yes they are different, and we may not understand them.  But all such people are loved by GOD and should be loved by us.

Jesus gave us a model when he cared for those no one else did.  To care for those who are on the fringes of life is a Jesus act.  I think it is now time we start being the church, and I that starts with me.

Happy Birthday Israel

Wall1Today sixty years ago Israel became a nation.  This is the miracle of the middle east.  When we look at the political landscape of the region we see nothing but oppression and darkness. But when we look at Israel there is light and freedom.

I say Happy Birthday Israel. To its people I say peace be with you.  To take a look at Israel today and all it has to offer click HERE

Honoring GOD

He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.  Prov 14:31

I am often surprised when I hear of Christians in leadership positions of corporations that treat people badly.  There is that giant of retail which has some of the worst employee relations in business.  Yet, I hear there are Christians on the board.

I have seen large mining operations run by a leading evangelical. These mines in Africa have a horrible record for employee welfare. So, what's the deal? It seems like making a buck is more important than caring for people.  Solomon's words speak of faith in action.  He shows those of us in leadership where our hearts are at.  By caring for those who have little we honor GOD.  By treating the poor badly we show the depth of our faith.

Business can be a way where we improve the lives of those around us.  Sure, we may make a few pennies less, but we will put a smile on the face of GOD.

Week in review

Life

This week has been one where I have not got done everything I wanted to.  I seem to have picked up a cold virus. So I have been operating at half speed.  I have been taking meds to open my sinus passages. Other than that I have been just enduring it.

Work

I went on a two day course.  Our company is really looking at changing the corporate culture.  This course was about everything we need to do that could make a positive change. There were over one hundred managers and directors in my meeting.  This was a very frank and open discussion. We all agreed it was time to put people first and the company second.

Friends

I have been avoiding people since I am not well.  But next week I get to meet with several friends. Meetings like this have become more important to me. As mother Teresa once said, "we can do no great thing only small things with great love".  I look forward to the opportunity for encouragement and building these folks up.

We also have another friend who is going through some life struggles.  This person has a father that is losing mobility and may need to be put in a nursing home quickly. On top of that our friend has to take an international trip. Everything just seems to hit at once.  We are praying for strength and peace during this time.

Study

I have enjoyed reading through Proverbs. What really jumps out at me is the deep theology in the book.  Many people see Proverbs just a good book for advice on how to live.  My  eyes were opened to see it in a different light. Proverbs seems to be a book that describes two kingdoms, one the kingdom of GOD, the other the kingdom of man.  I felt the pages calling out to me and demanding I make a choice, who do I follow,  GOD or man.

Personal reading

I have just brought a historical book on the knight Templar's. I am excited to read some solid history around a group of warriors that have generated so much myth.  I am intrigued in how they reconciled the gospel to their clear barbaric and violent acts.  I am also intrigued by the concept of a Christian warrior.  More to explore on that subject.

Thoughts on seeker sensitivity

After the Reveal study you may think that seeker sensitivity was dead in churches. I think the wounds from this ministry model will be around for a long time.

Here is one of the best responses I have seen to seeker sensitivity. To view click HERE

Sayings of the wise on wealth

The book of Proverbs has several authors. The most famous is of course Solomon. But we must not forget the "Sayings of the wise", Agur and King Lemuel.  I came across the following from the  Sayings of the wise.

Do not wear yourself out to get rich;  have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,  for they will surely sprout wings and fly off like an eagle. Prov 23:4-5.

This proverb reminded me of a recent conversion. I had run into someone I know and we immediately started a discussion on "how things were going".  This person started sharing about his financial difficulties. He had invested a large sum of money in building houses on some land.  The roads and sewer have been put in and houses are under construction.  Then it happened, the housing crisis hit. The banks started calling up and wanted their money.  In a good economy the banks may be more friendly but now they just want their cash. Naturally this person I know stands to lose a bundle, and based upon the body language was clearly very worried.

I have known other people, mostly Christians who dive in the  multilevel marketing businesses. They sell everything from vitamins to cleaning products. All these folks live in the hope of making it rich.  It is there passion, love and desire.  They degrade friends and family, reducing them to the level of a customer.  Nothing seems to be below them.  Profit is their GOD and their down line salvation.

There are even multilevel marketing business that target Christan's.  Their hook is "if you make it rich think of how much you can give to missions".  Sadly there are many who follow after wealth.  They use the gospel and missions as means to cover up, what I believe the bible calls greed, lust and coveting.

Jesus gave us a good model to follow, "seek first the kingdom of GOD".  As Christians we live with a different economic model than the world. Our model rests not in a plan, business or strategy but in a kingdom.  Such thinking is hard for many to grasp, but I believe it is essential we come to understand it.  Let us face some facts Communism has failed...but so has Capitalism.  Just as Communism left everyone poor, Capitalism excludes the masses from access to a sustainable living.  On a global scale two percent of the world's population holds eighty percent of the wealth.  This has left Latin America, the pacific rim, Asia, and Africa struggling for a daily meal.

Jesus kingdom is not about hording but about caring. John the baptist said "he who has two cloaks give it to the person who has none". Wow...what a concept, what an idea,  giving excess possessions away.  Many parts of the world are tinder boxes ripe for revolution.  People will do anything to feed their families, even side with an evil leader.  Hezbollah in Lebanon gets a great deal of support from the people.  Hezbollah's social services arm is very effective meeting the needs of the poor, they also run the largest hospital in Balbek.  As Napoleon said  "a revolution is nothing more than peoples opinions with  bayonets attached".   Poverty is making the world an unstable place.

The U.S government is giving a thousand dollars to each house hold in America to stimulate the economy. The idea is that we will get the 1 g and go out spending wildly on consumer goods.  When politicians do such things it makes me detest them even more.  Do they really think that this will fix America's woes? Of course not.  So what should we be doing with the money. I would like to suggest a kingdom approach.  Maybe there are those around you who need some help.  Maybe there is a ministry you have wanted to give to.  The poor of America are still here and with the poor I think we will find Jesus. Let us think beyond ourselves and plunge  our hearts in Christ's kingdom.   Now is not the time for buying more stuff.  Now is the time for caring about others.

Thought for the day

“Our Lord attracted sinners because He   was different. They drew near to Him because they felt that there was   something different about Him. That poor sinful woman of whom we read in Luke   7 did not draw near to the Pharisees and wash their feet with her tears, and   wipe them with the hair of her head. No, but she sensed something in our Lord   - His purity, His holiness, His love - and so she drew near to Him. It was   His essential difference that attracted her. And the world always expects us   to be different. This idea that you are going to win people to the Christian   faith by showing them that after all you are remarkably like them, is   theologically and psychologically a profound blunder."

Changing a community

I have posted before on many good churches that bring the redemptive work of Christ into their communities. Last night I came across another diamond in the rough. Extreme Makeover hosted the Martinez family. This is a pastor who has moved into a crime ridden community to bring healing and hope. Ever since this family moved in they have been slowly transforming the troubled community. Crime has gone down, violence has gone down and the place is starting to change.

Pastor Martinez, like so many others, has left the church building and is doing kingdom work.  If you want to see the story click HERE .

What do you think, is this what the church should be doing?

Some simple stuff

I don't have much to blog about. There are no grand thoughts going through my mind.  This weekend has been a simple one. I have kept up with friends blogs. Some are getting back to work others are arriving back home.  I have done a little reading and had a killer work out on Saturday. I normally take Sunday as a rest day, so the gym didn't see me.

Summer is here in Minnesota...it snowed again. That's right this is a winter that just won't go away. But regardless of the foul weather summer is in my heart.  I have started DIY projects around the house. I am also starting to plan my herb and vegetable garden.  I see myself as a bit of a brother Cadfael, just without the dead bodies. There is a lot of work to be done out doors this year and I am excited about it.

I am feeling a little restless in my heart. These are times when GOD is doing something I just have to figure out what.  One thing I am excited about is a possible trip to Israel. The tentative plans are, to fly into England and see my family for a few days. Then hop on a plan to Israel and  meet friends in Jerusalem.  After a week in Israel  fly back to England for a few more days and then home.  It is a dream that I hope comes about.
